Bamboo Saponins
Bamboo saponins (triterpenoid glycoside mixture)
Bamboo saponins are a complex mixture of amphiphilic triterpenoid or steroid glycosides extracted primarily from bamboo leaves, shoots, and culms (e.g., Phyllostachys and Bambusa species). They consist of a hydrophobic aglycone (sapogenin) linked to one or more hydrophilic sugar chains, conferring surfactant properties. These compounds exhibit foaming, emulsifying, and membrane-permeabilizing activities. In food and traditional medicine, they contribute to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering effects. Concentrations vary by species and plant part, typically 0.5–3% dry weight. They are studied for potential nutraceutical applications but require standardization due to structural diversity.
