Fatty acids (Palmitic acid as representative)

    Hexadecanoic acid

    C16H32O2

Palmitic acid is a saturated long-chain fatty acid and the most common saturated fatty acid found in animals and plants. It constitutes a major component of palm oil (hence the name) and is present in meat, dairy products, and cocoa butter. As a representative of fatty acids, it plays critical roles in energy storage, membrane structure, and as a precursor for other lipids. It is a white crystalline solid at room temperature with a faint odor. Industrially, it is used in soaps, cosmetics, lubricants, and food additives. In biochemistry, it is synthesized via fatty acid synthase and can undergo beta-oxidation for energy production. Its hydrophobic nature makes it insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
