Hexadecanoic acid (Palmitic acid)

    Hexadecanoic acid

    C16H32O2

Hexadecanoic acid, commonly known as palmitic acid, is a saturated long-chain fatty acid with 16 carbon atoms. It is one of the most abundant saturated fatty acids in nature, occurring widely in palm oil, animal fats, meat, dairy products, and some vegetable oils. Biologically, it functions as a major component of cell membrane phospholipids, serves as an energy storage molecule, and participates in protein palmitoylation for membrane anchoring. Industrially, it is obtained via hydrolysis of triglycerides and used in soaps, cosmetics, lubricants, food emulsifiers, and candles. It exists as a white crystalline solid at room temperature with a mild waxy odor and is relatively stable under normal conditions but can undergo oxidation at high temperatures.
