Silica
Silicon dioxide
Silica (silicon dioxide) is a naturally occurring compound widely used in the food industry as an anti-caking agent (E551) to prevent clumping in powdered spices, salts, and seasonings. It exists in amorphous and crystalline forms; food-grade silica is typically amorphous and appears as a fine white powder. Chemically inert with high thermal stability, it does not react with most food components. In spices, it improves flowability without altering flavor or aroma. Its network structure consists of tetrahedral SiO4 units linked by oxygen bridges, providing mechanical strength and low reactivity. Silica is also found in plant cell walls and contributes to structural integrity in some botanical sources.
