γ-Tocopherol
(2R)-2,7,8-trimethyl-2-[(4R,8R)-4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl]-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-6-ol
Gamma-tocopherol is a naturally occurring form of vitamin E found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. It functions as a lipophilic antioxidant that scavenges reactive oxygen species and protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from peroxidation. Structurally distinct from alpha-tocopherol by lacking a methyl group at the 5-position, it exhibits unique anti-inflammatory properties and is metabolized to gamma-carboxyethyl hydroxychroman. It contributes to cardiovascular health and may complement alpha-tocopherol in mixed tocopherol supplements.
